A day in the life of a Full Stack Developer
We’re incredibly proud of our Delio team and with tech function growing, Full Stack Developer Joe shines a spotlight on his role in the Delio journey and highlights what it is like to work for a company that is scaling up quickly.
What does your typical day as a Full Stack Developer look like?
My mornings kick-off like most people in an office: coffee and emails. Once I am up to speed, I plan the day, scribbling down tasks onto post-it notes and sticking them around my monitors.
Each morning I have a 15-minute stand-up with my scrum team where we discuss our daily objectives and how we will tackle tasks – making good use of our Kanban board. It’s a handy way to keep up with how we are all doing, see if there are any blockers, and generally, prioritise tasks.
After the daily stand-up, one of our team members will attend the ‘Scrum of Scrums’ meeting, reporting any work item completions or blockages to the wider team. Afterwards, we all get about completing the tasks our team have set for the day. This can range from developing new product features to squashing bugs found by our testing team to reviewing code written by others. I can generally determine how productive my day has been by counting how many post-it notes are crumpled up on my desk at the end of the day!
What do you like about being a Full Stack Dev?
My favourite thing is the variety of work. One minute I’m creating a new front-end React component for our platform and the next I’m writing a Laravel database migration. Being a Full Stack Dev opens the door to lots of different coding languages and frameworks, allowing you to develop a wide array of skills.
Every Developer has their strengths and weaknesses. Mine are more weighted to front-end development, specifically React/JavaScript development. I also enjoy front-end design, ensuring consistency across the entire platform – after all, that’s what our clients see.
Why would you encourage others to join Delio?
I was initially drawn to Delio because of its potential, and its vibrant environment. I really wanted to work for a start-up at the time and had never worked for a fintech company before, so Delio straight away sounded like an exciting place to be.
The best thing about Delio for me is the people. From the get-go, everyone is very supportive and encouraging of one another. Everyone actively listens to ideas, which makes you feel valued and an integral part of the business.
What makes (in your opinion) an excellent Full Stack Dev?
A love for learning new skills! As it is such a fast-paced environment, it is essential to develop your skills and get out of the comfort zone.
The ability to communicate effectively and being a team spirit.
As we are problem-solvers, creativity is key. I believe thinking outside of the box and trying new things are valuable assets to have.
How would you describe (your) team?
Without meaning to sound cliché, our tech team feels like a family. Everyone is always keen to lend their support no matter how busy they are. We always share and listen to other people’s ideas when trying to solve problems. It’s great to work in a team filled with so many switched-on people who are not only work colleagues but also people you enjoy sharing a pint with after work.
If you like the sound of our work, then join our tech team. We’re looking for people who want to grow and are idea-driven to become a part of our next chapter.
