Career progression at Delio: From graduate scheme to client director

19th April 2022

When it comes to discussing career progression at Delio, there’s no one better to talk to than our recently appointed enterprise client director, Bhumi. Having joined Delio in its early stages of start-up growth – our 13th employee to be precise – Bhumi has been an integral part of our journey over the last five years. We spoke to her to see how she has paved her career path since joining us on a graduate scheme.

Can you tell us about your journey at Delio?

I joined Delio straight out of university in 2017. At this time, the company was still very much an early-stage start-up, which meant that my roles and responsibilities throughout the graduate scheme varied. I trained across different parts of the business, ranging from product to sales to account management. This was a great opportunity, as I got to fully grasp Delio’s structure and our private markets platform, before determining where I felt most comfortable and how best to use my skills.

While experiencing these varied roles, I particularly enjoyed working on the customer success side of the business. The more I went to client events and shadowed sales pitches, the more I realised that I wanted to be in front of financial institutions and support them as part of the commercial team.

I became a client manager in 2018 when I started working with Delio’s London-based customers. My goals were to ensure our existing clients had the tools and knowledge to make the most of their Delio platform, while solving any of their problems, taking on product feedback and introducing clients across the Delio network to each other.

One of the things I have enjoyed the most is offering this support and listening to our clients. Delio has always encouraged me to push ahead and shape my own path, so when I became a senior account manager in 2020, I had the opportunity to expand my responsibilities.

“As the company has grown, I have grown. I feel like I’m a valued member of the team. There’s always new opportunities as the company evolves and you feel like you can make a difference.”

What has helped you thrive as a client manager?

I think the professionalism and strong rapport I have with clients are certainly important. The institutions that we work with are not just our ‘clients’, they’re our partners. We’re also very proud that we don’t just add value through our technology. Whether clients are hiring, looking for partners in private markets, or seeking to expand their offering, they can use Delio’s services to strengthen those relationships.

As my role is people-centric, a client manager needs to enjoy engaging and listening to clients. After all, one of the main tasks is to try to solve their pain points and grasp how they can use our product most effectively. Part of this discovery is figuring out the differences between clients’ wants and needs. Ultimately, they need to feel as though their client manager understands their point of view.

What would you say to people considering the next stage of their careers at Delio?

There is a lot of emphasis on cross-departmental working, where various teams across the business work together to create the best experience for our clients. It’s one of the things that really allows people to see how different departments work and grow much more holistically. At the same time, there are many projects within Delio that people across departments can support. This not only makes your day-to-day exciting, but it also allows you to work with other people and broaden your skill set.

For example, outside of my client role, I am also the strategy director of Impact Agora, a subsidiary firm of Delio and an institutional marketplace for impact investing. I would really encourage anyone – whether you’re at Delio or work in a different field –  to be open to all opportunities.

“You never know what may come around. However, by keeping the doors open and staying open-minded, so many new opportunities can present themselves that could push your career forward in ways you may not even have considered.”
